Subtropical Storm Forms in Atlantic; Pacific Yields Tropical Wonders Of Its Own

Not only is it rare that we have the first named storm of the year in January in the Atlantic, but we're also talking about activity in the central Pacific! Subtropical Storm Alex has formed in the Atlantic and is the first storm to form in January since 1978. Meanwhile, Hurricane Pali in the central Pacific has formed closer to the equator than many thought possible and continues to head in that direction.
