Last week (9-15 May) across the World shows the U.S. trending -0.6F cooler than last year, coldest in 36 years (much below average), 21% drier than last year, driest in 8 years, 11th driest in 36 years. CLICK ON IMAGES FOR A LARGER VIEW.

Warmer across Canada but still below average and the driest in 36 years! Europe was the warmest in 3 years with above average temperatures so an uptick in seasonal category sales. Russia was also the warmest in 11 years.

Spring (Mar - May) across the U.S. is trending 0.8F warmer than last year (above average temperatures) will make this the warmest Spring in 9 years and 6th warmest of the past 36 years. This is a favorable trend for Spring seasonal merchandise. Rainfall has been the least in 9 years, 16% less than last year and 8th least in 36 years. As a result, tornadoes and severe weather is actually down 30% vs last year, 30% below average and a whopping 68% less than they hyper active tornado season in 2011. Snowfall is down 25% vs last year, least in 11 years and 2nd least in 36 years. Overall these are very favorable trends for Spring merchandise sales!

NOAA has claimed La Nina is done, but a look at the ocean temperatures still shows a cooler than average equatorial Pacific and models still show a slightly negative outlook for the balance of 2021. This will continue the dry cycles that have plagued South America, the U.S., China and parts of Northern India.

Dry to drought phases across the U.S. remain at 61% which is the most widespread coverage since 2013 and well above the average of 43%. It's a wholesale change from 2019 which was extremely wet when only 9% of the country had drought. Weather Trends expects this dry cycle to intensify this Summer!

This week (17-23 May) across the U.S. shows the U.S. having a first Summer-like warm up with national temperatures trending 1.9F warmer than last year making it the warmest in 25 years, 2nd warmest in 36 years! Rainfall remains below average trending 45% less than last year and least in 7 years.

Next Week (24-30 May) turns a bit cooler vs last year, but still 14th warmest of the past 36 years. Rainfall remains on the below average side trending driest in 16 years nationally.

For the World overall (17-30 May) the warm spots are in Eastern North America, Russia, Africa, the Middle East and Brazil.
