The severe weather season ramped up this past week with Oklahoma reporting near record sized hail. Season to date hail is up +132% vs last year, +69% above average and the most in 7 years. While tornadoes are down -51% vs last year, we expect this to ramp up with a very active Spring. Severe winds are down -20% vs last year but still +21% above average.

Last week (10-16 March) across the World showed the U.S. trending +9.4F warmer than last year, warmest in 8 years and 2nd warmest of the past 39 years. Rainfall was down 23% vs last year and 20th driest of the past 39 while snowfall was down -84% vs a year ago, least in 8 years and 7th least of the past 39. Canada was the wettest in 11 years but also the warmest in 8 years. The cool spots were limited to the Western U.S., Alaska and Siberia.

This week (17-23 March) shows a continued stormy pattern with the U.S. trending +4.5F warmer than last year, 17th warmest of the past 39 years. But, a much cooler trend for the Midwest to Southeast while the Pacific Northwest is the warmer spot. Rainfall up +44% vs last year, 16th wettest in 39 years, while snowfall is -2% vs LY and 20th least of the past 39 years. But, snow is likely for the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and New England so it will feel like Winter after the taste of Spring last week. Seasonal sales are likely to slow this week with the colder weather moving in.

The 6-day (16-21 March) snowfall outlook shows national snowfall down -45% vs last year, 11th least of the past 39, but snowy for the Northern tier of the U.S. and South Central Rockies.

Next week (24-30 March) before Easter shows a reinforcing shot of very cold air moving back into the Central U.S. with the potential for heavy snow. More severe weather threats in the Midwest and Southeast. The U.S. overall trends +2.7F warmer than last year and 18th warmest of the past 39 years. Overall this is a very negative week for seasonal merchandise sales. Rainfall up +95% making it the #1 wettest in over 39 years, while snowfall is also up +90% and the #1 snowiest in 39 years. So, a wintry and stormy start to Spring!

The World 2-week outlook (17-30 March) shows much colder weather for Canada and the Eastern half of the U.S. while much warmer for Alaska and the West Coast. Europe is warm and wet as is Brazil.
