Captain's Log

Happy Monday! :)

And SPRING is only 2 days away!

LOG 1

The cool spots across the world this week (18-24 March) are mainly right here in the Southeast U.S., Greenland, Eastern Siberia, The Middle East and Argentina. CLICK ON IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

LOG 2

Zooming into the U.S. we can see the cooler weather in the Southeast this week but that will warm up by the weekend. For the U.S. overall the week is warmer than last year but still 13th coldest in 30 years but driest in 5 years and 3rd driest in 30 years with the 2nd least snowfall in 30 years!

LOG 3

The last week of March (25-31 March) goes out like a lamb in terms of temperatures in the U.S. with the nation trending warmer than last year and 8th warmest of the past 30 years but back to the storm and severe weather pattern making it #1 wettest in 30 years but least snow in 7 years.

LOG 4

Cooler trends next week are limitedto Eastern Europe, The Middle East, Russia and North Africa.

LOG 5

The year-over-year change in ocean temperatures is very dramatic in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean going from weak La Niña to moderate El Niño. This is one of many factors that we believe will result in a below average Atlantic Basin hurricane season.

LOG 6

Most of the model guidance suggests we're headed for a somewhat unusual trend with a strengthening El Niño through the middle of Summer. This will likely suppress hurricane activity due to wind shear and it should lead to a drier later half of 2019 for the U.S. after such a wet pattern the past couple years.

LOG 7

Soil moisture is nearly saturated throughout the Central U.S. with a still heavy snowpack creating major river flooding. This will continue for the weeks ahead as the snow melts.

LOG 8

There is still over 2 feet of snow on the ground in the Upper Plains which will likely melt rapidly with the big warm up next week.

LOG 9This morning there were already 280 river gauges above flood stage and this will continue to expand down the Missouri and Mississippi rivers the next few weeks.

LOG 10When the little Angelina Kirk says "SO MUCH FUN" you know Daddy can say "mission accomplished" on the 5-year anniversary day trip to Kalahari water park resort in the Poconos. :)
