Boo! :)
Halloween across the U.S. looks to be the warmest in at least 25 years for the U.S. overall with national temperatures trending +6.8F above average and driest in 6 years nationally. The Central U.S. is down right Summer-like with record hot weather while the Northeast is the cool spot.
The Pacific Northwest has the scariest weather with rain and mountain snow while the Northeast is the driest in 18 years.
The snowiest Halloween in the U.S. was 1993, it was also the coldest. The hottest is this year and 1999. The wettest was 2013 with rainfall 273% above average but last year was the 2nd wettest +236% above average for the U.S. as a whole. The driest year was 2007.
The first week of November continues the warm trends, but signs of change on the horizon! National temperatures are the #1 warmest in 25 years and driest in 4 years with below average rain and snowfall.
But, we only need to look what's been happening in Russia to get a sense of what's headed our way in the weeks and Winter ahead!
The first week of November in Russia-Siberia continues the frigid/snowy October trends with the coldest first week of November in at least 25 years and the snowiest in 18 years. October weather in Siberia is frequently an indicator of how much cold air will be available for the Northern Hemisphere as early snow cover in Siberia allows the source region to expand allowing the Polar Vortex to getcranking early. We got that!
This frigid air mass is building early and will help to enhance the Polar Vortex in the weeks ahead. So, it won't be long for this spills into the Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast U.S. Short range models hint at the first cold snap mid-month with the seasons 1st or 2nd snowfall from the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast mid-month. Our long range forecast shows the bigger cold/snowy pattern starting in late November into December for the Eastern half of the U.S.
