That time of year to
FALL BACK tonight (1 Nov Sunday) 2am EDT becomes 1am EST. Not happy about a 4:58pm sunset tomorrow.
So let's ask SUNNY - the weathertrends360 AI companion
why candy prices are still so high and is there hope for a weather pattern change next year?
Cocoa is primarily grown in the
Ivory Coast of West Africa and Malaysia, and those regions were hard hit by drought and disease back in 2023 when West Africa was the driest in 24 years dramatically impacting Cocoa supplies. Low supply led to a huge surge in Cocoa prices in 2024-2025.
Then the rain came in 2025 and early 2026 and Cocoa prices plummeted -55% to 3 year lows. But then the rapidly developing strong El Niño brought a return to widespread dryness to West Africa and most of Malaysia sending prices surging +89% since the early year lows.
The 1 June to 28 October period was the driest in 27 years across Central Africa and equally dry in Malaysia.
The global weather circulation patterns in response to the strongest El Nino in 149 years and a strongly positive Indian Ocean Dipole (+IOD) resulted in significant sinking air
pattern ("Walker Cells") which means drought over the Equatorial regions from W. Africa, Northern Brazil and Malaysia - key Cocoa growing areas. This same pattern resulted in significant rising air in the Pacific Ocean creating the near record number of hurricanes and flooding in Hawaii and starting in the U.S.
This current near record El Nino (very warm Equatorial Pacific Ocean Temperatures) will peak around December 2026,
but wt360 is already projecting a return to a moderate La Nina pattern late in 2027 with rapid expansion of the colder than average waters developing sub-surface West and Central Pacific. So expect one crazy volatile weather pattern over the next 12-18 months.
With this pattern shift expect the rains to return to Malaysia and Africa as well. The wt360 Fall 2027 (next year) outlook shows the wetter and cooler pattern across some of the Cocoa regions.

Last week (25-31 Oct) across the World shows the U.S. trending +5.7F warmer than last year and 7th warmest in 41 years, with rainfall down -51% vs LY, driest in 10 years. This benefits outdoor home centers, outdoor decor, cold beverages, but hurts Fall apparel merchandise. The West Coast was the most favorable for Fall cold weather items. Cooler and drier across Canada was a plus and Central Europe was also favorable for Fall sales.
NFL Week 8 shows a more Fall-like pattern (Sunday 1 Nov) for the West Coast and East Coast games, warmer in the Lakes. Cooler/wetter can hurt attendance but benefits cold weather apparel and hot beverage sales.
This week (1-7 Nov) shows the start of a very WET pattern developing across much of the U.S. The week overall trends +367% wetter than last year and the #1 wettest in over 41 years with the biggest YOY increase toward wetter weather in decades. This will benefit wet weather gear, wiper blades, washer fluid, storm/winter tires and more. Temperatures trend +4.2F warmer than a year ago, warmest in 4 years and 3rd warmest in 41 years with the West the favored region for Fall apparel sales.
The 6-day Snowfall Forecast (31 Oct - 5 Nov) shows heavy mountain snows throughout much of the West, a common theme this Winter with a much snowier Winter for the Sierras and Rocky Mountains.
Next week (8-14 Nov) across the U.S. shows temperatures moderating a bit with national temperatures trending -0.2F cooler than a year ago, coolest in 7 years but still 18th warmest of the past 41 years. The Western U.S. continues to show the greatest change toward much colder YOY weather conditions.
The World 2-week Temperature Outlook (1-14 Nov) shows the Western U.S., Europe, Western Russia and Northeast China with the best conditions for Fall seasonal category sales.
The World 2-week Precipitation Outlook (1-14 Nov) shows a huge change from the past two Novembers that got off to dry starts globally, this year the wettest start for the World in 17 years.
