Captain's Log
The last day of the month of May...is the year moving at Warp Speed for you too?

For the U.S. overall May will end up on the cool side trending the coolest in 5 years with -0.1F below average temperatures and -1.3F colder than last year. The middle of the month brought the epic cold with frost, freezes and even light accumulating snow to the Ohio Valley and Northeast. And then we end the month with a heat-wave and 3 to 4 days of 90F temps in the Northeast and even a record 96F at Newark NJ. Tornadoes were down 43% vs last year for the U.S. overall but we had the 2nd named tropical storm (Bonnie 29th - landfall near Charleston SC) before the official star of the hurricane season. Only the 4th time in 165 years to have two named storms before 1 June. To see how the weather trended across the globe - see our latest blog recapping the month.

June 1st - 14th looks to dry out for the Western Corn Belt (IA, KS, MO, S. IL) into the Southeast with the 4th driest start to June in 25 years for these regions and driest since 2012 - a sign of things to come!!! Texas doesn't look so lucky with the month getting off to the wettest start in 25+ years so more rain for soggy Texas. It's generally cooler than average from Texas to the Ohio Valley while the Southeast is warmer than average with very hot conditions for the western half of the country. Late June looks get very hot/dry for the Eastern half of the country with the start of a scorching hot pattern going into the Summer!

We hope your short work week is off to a great start folks! - Capt Kirk out.
